Why I bought the most famous drum machine of all time
Like most people, I've always wanted to own an original Roland TR-808 but it's always been the wrong price or the wrong time or both. Earlier this year my time finally came.
I wanted to make a video showing why it's still a very relevant and useful instrument in a modern studio and that it's not just purely about nostalgia, whilst that obviously plays a part!

A look at the revolutionary Roland MC-8 from 1977 which was one of the earliest microprocessor-controlled digital sequencers. Around 200 of these units were made and they were extremely expensive. As I've covered the history of this unit several times, I thought it would be interesting to follow in the footsteps of a band that made significant use of the MC-8, which was Yellow Magic Orchestra. ...

Whooped de doo, good for you! Seriously though, good for you! You deserve it! I would love to have the original Roland TR-808 but at this time I am making due with the RD-8. Excellent hardware clone for the value and with all the connectivity as the original, plus Midi in, out and thru. I also run it through effects pedals and processors. Some much fun! Oh, and using it in conjunction with the Keystep Pro has been a lot of fun too! Do the best with what you have! Just keep making music, friends! Thanks for the inspiration as always, Alex!

Will smt like the DMX VST will out someday ? By the way great work on that DMX... the Decay param helps a lot compared to the great sounding original unit which is kind of locked for this parameter and hihat is the one sound that needs the more processing to be usefull in other style than those 80's fat hat... btw perfect for boom bap style no fat free hat in there.

I was exposed to Don Muro's "An Overview of Electronic Instruments" when I was about 13/14 years old. At the time I was playing trumpet in the school band. It was interesting but I didn't appreciate what I was watching until about 20 years later, and a couple other wind instruments under my belt. My general music teacher that used this video in his curriculum was kind enough to give me the name of the video when I reached out to him. I hadn't seen it at that point about 25 years prior. Quick google search and $10 later Mr Muro's DVD was in my hands. The extra material contained on that was just as important in my mind as the primary video. I have dabbled with MIDI controllers and synthesizers over the years mainly for rhythm and note input for music notation software. This is the 3rd or 4th full story video of yours I've binge watched now. Excellent! Thoroughly enjoying these. I found a new rabbit hole to explore. Cheers! PJ

The Juno just sounds the chords you hear as I play, what you're hearing as a tail are the congas from the TR-808 that I've tuned to specific notes and run through a pitch shifter (up an octave) and then an analogue delay that keeps them rolling round. There's no loopers involved.
